Do You Need a Pool CPR Sign in NSW?
Yes. NSW swimming pool owners are required to display a pool CPR sign near their swimming pool, including portable pools covered by NSW pool safety laws.
The sign provides important resuscitation instructions in an emergency and forms part of a pool compliance inspection.
NSW Pool CPR Sign Requirements
Under the NSW pool safety requirements, the CPR sign must:
Be displayed in a prominent position near the swimming pool
Be maintained in good condition
Be easily readable from a distance of three metres
Contain the prescribed resuscitation information
Remain clearly visible and unobstructed
Weatherproof
Minimum 300mm x 300mm
A faded, damaged, illegible or incorrectly positioned sign may prevent a Certificate of Compliance from being issued.
Does an Existing CPR Sign Need to Be Replaced?
Updated NSW CPR signage requirements came into effect on 1 September 2019.
All new pools must display the updated sign. Owners of existing pools are not generally required to replace an older sign solely because of this change, unless the pool barrier has been substantially altered or rebuilt.
However, an existing sign must still meet the requirements applying to the pool and remain legible and in good condition.

Where Should the Pool CPR Sign Be Displayed?
The sign should be installed in a prominent position within the immediate vicinity of the pool.
It should not be:
Hidden behind plants or pool equipment
Obstructed by furniture
Installed somewhere difficult to see
Faded or damaged by weather
Placed where the instructions cannot be read clearly
Choose a secure, visible location where the sign can be quickly located in an emergency.
Can a Missing Pool CPR Sign Cause an Inspection Failure?
Yes. A missing or unsuitable pool CPR sign can prevent certification, even when the physical pool barrier otherwise complies.
